GUT
RENOVATION tells the inside story of the rezoning,
demolition and repurposing of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Friedrich
details the heart-rending loss of a thriving community of working
class residents and artists, as well as the loss of many beautiful
old industrial buildings that accommodated hundreds of small
businesses, manufacturers, and artists’ studios, including
the eccentric communal loft which was her home for twenty years.
Along the way, Friedrich slyly skewers the city planners, ad
men, developers, architects and the new tenants they attract
with their offers of tax-free luxury living “with a bohemian
twist. |

In CHILDREN
OF SRIKANDI, participants collectively worked as
crew members or actresses in each other’s film, with individual
stories ranging from observational documentary and concept art
to personal essay. We see that change is possible on all levels
of the film: personal, political, and formal. Transformation
is always inscribed in the narrative; form and identity are
fluid; perspectives are shifted. |

STILL
AROUND is a feature length compilation of 15 short
films about HIV/AIDS that weaves a diverse slate of stories
into one powerful video AIDS quilt of our times. By connecting
well-known San Francisco Bay area filmmakers with individuals
who are living with HIV/AIDS, the voices of women, men, gay
and straight, transgender, young and old, and from many ethnic
backgrounds come together to paint an unmatched emotional portrait
of how people thrive and survive in the face of long term illness. |

RIOT
ACTS is a 'trans-fabulous' rockumentary representing
the multi-dimensional lives of transgender and gender variant
musicians. A first-hand perspective of the intersections between
gender performance and stage performance, Riot Acts suggests
that identities and bodies are undeniably political, and the
journey within a trans experience isn't always one of tragedy,
but one of creativity and joy. |

SEX
IN AN EPIDEMIC is a pioneering documentary about
the history of “safer sex” in the United States.
Few concepts have had as great an impact on sexuality over the
past decade as that of “safer sex.” Yet, as a concept,
it is important to remember two things: first, safer sex had
to be invented amidst a terrifying lack of information that
existed before the discovery of HIV. Secondly, safer sex as
a concept had to be sold by the persistent and creative persuasion
of community based groups all across the country. This ground-breaking
film places the history of safer sex education on a trajectory
with current HIV prevention while exploring the personal, political
and structural challenges that have continually hampered the
best efforts of HIV educators and community groups to curb HIV
infection rates in the United States. |

Signs
that everything wasn’t quite right came early and often
for fAe. Though he was “born with girl parts,”
a trip to the girls’ room on the first day of school
was met with terrified screams. At age three, industrious
little fAe dreamt of devising a synthetic penis, which he
hoped would let him pee like a boy. Early on, fAe found some
comfort in a lesbian identity but knew this was not his true
self. Years of introspection led to the undeniable conclusion
that fAe was a man mistakenly endowed with a woman’s
body. His caring —but somewhat careless — brother
notes that these biological errors simply occur sometimes,
likening fAe’s condition to that of a boy from a recent
magazine article he read—a boy born with fins for feet. |

they find themselves vulnerable and preyed upon. CRUEL

PILLS
PROFITS PROTEST: CHRONICLE OF THE GLOBAL AIDS MOVEMENT is
an up-to-the minute documentary about AIDS treatment activism.
It examines the national and international grass roots response
to an epidemic that has already overshadowed the Black Death
in terms of human lives lost. The demand for access to affordable
treatment for 40 million people living with HIV, most of whom
live in poor countries, represents one of the most successful
political movements of contemporary history. |
