Over the course of two eventful years, half a dozen gay New Yorkers come clean about their ongoing love affairs with crystal meth. From the twentysomething singer-songwriter J., who figures his prime is the time to enjoy the party scene, to the hunky ex-porn actor CJ, who’s desperate to remain a sex object in his forties, they are a singularly charming bunch who astonish us with their breathtaking candor and lack of inhibition. (This film contains graphic scenes of drug use and sex.)

Crystal meth can encourage unsafe sex by increasing the libido while muting inhibitions. “When you do crystal, you don’t ask questions,” says one user. “Crystal is sort of like a silencer.” Any rational person in the age of AIDS can see the dangers of mixing speed and sex, including these guys (when they’re not high), but they confess that heightened sexual pleasure is a powerful impetus not to quit.

“To illuminate these not-so-isolated behaviors within the larger social context, director Jay Corcoran includes interviews with health professionals as well as activist and recovering addict Peter Staley. It’s not the big picture that fixes our attention, though, but the bright, likable individuals struggling before our eyes. That’s another trait of drug documentaries: they make us root for rehab.” -- Frameline Film Festival
