announce the acquisition of our latest film SHE’S A BOY I
KNEW, by Gwen Haworth
"Witty, brave, and vulnerable, Haworth gave us the most affecting
and memorable documentary of the year." VANCOUVER MAGAZINE
"Haworth creates an emotional space that engulfs the viewer
in a way that's extremely rare in any film, whether fiction or non-fiction."
Kevin Griffin, THE VANCOUVER SUN
"Unique among the slew of documentaries on changing one's gender,
this film blends personal interviews with gorgeous animation, offering
a rich and complex portrait of the effects transitioning has not
just on the individual, but those around her."
Katharine Setzer, image+nation FILM FESTIVAL
"I loved 'She's a Boy I Knew' - made with loving care, it dares
to reveal an inner journey without restraint. Beautifully executed,
profoundly insightful. I found myself appreciating it as a mother,
a friend, a sister and a filmmaker." Anne Wheeler,
BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE
"A personal story of transexuality, becomes a tribute to family
and in the truest sense, unconditional love." Bethina
Abrahams, SUITE101.com
Finding self-empowerment through self-representation, SHE’S
A BOY I KNEW is a comic, heartbreaking, and uplifting autobiography
that focuses on the interpersonal relationships of a family who
unexpectedly find their bonds strengthening as they overcome their
preconceptions of gender and sexuality. SHE’S A BOY
I KNEW tells the story of Steven's transition to Gwen and
how that transition affects those closest to her. Using archival
footage and animation to illustrate her story, filmmaker Gwen Haworth
allows us to become a part of the inner circle of family and friends
as they grapple with the changes that are happening and the feelings
that arise along the way. What makes this film so refreshing is
the thoughtfulness and self-examination of everyone involved. We're
privy to complicated yet eloquently articulated feelings of anger,
betrayal and fear as well as compassion, love and acceptance. These
are smart, observant, self-aware people talking about the things
that are hardest to talk about, yet doing so with incredible insight,
grace and honesty. Vancouver
